Junior States Wrap

Last weekend, the Juniors had their final dance in the pool for the LC season with the Junior LC State Champs being held at HBF Stadium. City had a strong representation throughout the meet and all our juniors competed exceptionally well. City of Perth walked away in second place overall in terms of PB % for the meet, with 81% of swims being personal bests! The club was pipped at the post by 1%!

Zara and Isaac both walked away with medals from their swims. Zara picked up a bronze medal in her 200 Breaststroke while Isaac claimed a sweep of bronze medals in his 50, 100 and 200 Breaststroke!

A huge shoutout to Lola who was selected to read the oath on behalf of all the attending athletes.

Congratulations to all our Junior LC State Qualifiers and competitors: Amelie, Zara, Heidi, Isaac, Milli, Sofia, Lola, Charlotte, Ethan, Logan, Adam and Camille!

Lastly, thank you to Eoin for supporting our juniors over this three-day comp weekend, our senior squad members (Callum, Tully and Max) and assistance coach Meg who came out to cheer on our juniors and club ambassador Joshua Hofer OAM who volunteered his time on Sunday!

Open Water: Final Update
Open Water Swim Series:
On Saturday 9th March, the 2023/24 Open Water Swim Series wrapped up with the Big Ocean Relay at Swanbourne Beach. The overall winners of the series were announced at the end of the morning, and our very own Callum Greenshields won the overall shield for the Open Male category. Well done Callum!

Port to Pub:
Quickly following the end of the Swim Series, the annual Port to Pub was held on Saturday the 16th March. After much better conditions than a few weeks prior, the event went ahead at full steam and our athletes competed exceptionally. Callum once again dominated the race, taking out the overall win in the Ultra-Marathon 25km race in under 6 hours (5hrs 51 mins)! Jay and Stella competed in the duo race and came away second in their category, while Jayde and her duo partner finished first overall in their category! Well done to all of you on these incredible achievements.

Get to Know You - Ryan Evernden
Next up in the Get To Know You series is club registrar and coaching provider Ryan Evernden. Keep reading to find out more about Ryan.

Name: Ryan Evernden
Age: 29
Role at the club: The dude that keeps Eoin Happy.
Place of Birth: England
Occupation: Best described as business owner/ strength & conditioning coach
Squad: I have a role with the entire squad as I oversee the coaching program, but I have a more direct role with swimmers in the club from 12 - 33 years of age
Hobbies: Taking time to escape the city and finding cool places with my family
Family / Pets: Wife Annika, Daughter Luna, pets Peanut and Butter
Favourite food and drink: I love a parmy
Interesting fact about yourself: Before I moved to Australia, I was one of the worst swimmers in swimming lessons. When I moved to Australia I was ok but nothing special at a junior level. When I moved from Bunbury to Perth, I had more country swimming records than anyone else and had captained the state team. When I retired from swimming (the 2nd time), I had a 200 Breaststroke PB of 2.08 Short Course. My achievements aren’t overly interesting, but I do find my swimming story interesting.
It can just show, that just because you're not good at something right now, it doesn't mean you won't be good at it if you love it and work hard for it.
What's on your bucket list: To travel Australia in a Van while working for at least 6 months, climb Everest, and create something that provides swimmers with true value and helps progress the sport.
Length of time at City of Perth: I have been with the club officially since 2012, but I started being a part of the club as a country swimmer in 2010
Can you briefly describe your main responsibilities in your role?: To help provide you with the best swimming experience possible.
What motivated you to become a committee member?: I want to leave this club in a better place than I first found it.
What are your goals for the club over the next season?: Increase the program numbers to 140 active participants, increase the number of club members to 200+, while continuing to improve the training and competitive experience of our swimmers.

We hope you enjoyed getting to know Ryan a little bit better! Keep an eye out for our next Get To Know You column.

Fuel to Go & Play
As we head into the cooler months, why not try this carrot, mint and ginger soup for dinner. It has a green traffic light from Fuel to Go & Play!

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1.5 litres salt reduced vegetable stock
  • 2 kg carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 4 tablespoons fresh mint, chopped
  • Reduced fat yoghurt or sour cream to serve

Method:

  1. Heat oil in a large heavy-based saucepan. Sauté onion, ginger, garlic and carrot over medium heat for 5-10 minutes, or until the onion has softened
  2. Add stock, bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the carrot is tender
  3. Process the soup in batches in a blender or food processor until smooth (or blend in the pot using a hand held blender to save on washing!).
  4. Return to the saucepan and add a little more stock or water to thin the soup to your preferred consistency
  5. Stir through mint, reheat and serve

JAN-FEB 2024
Hello and welcome back to the next edition of the City of Perth Splash - the first for 2024. It has been a busy start to the year with our Open Water swimmers finishing off their season at National Champs as well as attempting the Rottnest Channel Swim. Our club also hosted the first City Classic of the year and competed in the B-Grade Premierships. In this issue of the Splash you will find: OW Nationals Wrap, Club Premierships, City Classic Success, Rotto Craziness, Club Night Info, City of Perth Achieves Gold, Committee Role Available, Uniform Reminders, Fuel to Go & Play, Upcoming Events and Committee Contacts.
Open Water Nationals Wrap
Over the Australia Day Week in January, four of our athletes travelled to Busselton in WA's South West to compete at the 2024 Australian Open Water National Championships. It was a very successful meet for our athletes Stella Freeman, Max Coten, Renè Watson and Callum Greenshields who enjoyed a week of racing and banter. Keep reading for a wrap-up of these championships written by Stella.

This year open water nationals were held in Busselton where we swam in a 1.25km course under the jetty. The trip began with a warm-up swim by the jetty where we got a feel for the water and saw lots of fish. We collectively decided open water swimming is pretty much just competitive snorkelling!

The first day of racing was the 10km race where Max and Callum smashed it placing 6th and 9th (Aus) respectively in the Men’s open category! Renè followed up the boy’s impressive 10km swim with a cheeky 7th place (Aus) cracking the top 8 in Australia! On the jetty saw Eoin, Tully, myself and several city supporters cheering our swimmers on. Tully and I even made a Swim WA Instagram story feature, with our combined feeding strategy to stop Tully falling off the pontoon during Callum’s feed! The 10km events were followed by some great recovery using “The Recovery Project” boots and arms and some freezing ice baths.
Day two was the big day! The relay day!! On day two we competed in the 4 x 1.25km open relay where Callum lead us off handing over to myself putting us in second place! I then changed over to Renè who changed over to Max who anchored us home to finish in a solid 6th place (Aus) in a time of 1:02:01:09.
We all enjoyed a team lunch at The Shelter chatting about the race and enjoying a delicious meal. The day concluded with us playing some card games and grabbing some dinner on the foreshore.

Day three was our rest day and the community swim. We spent the day chilling out, recovering, and enjoying the beautiful Busselton weather.

On our final day Max, Renè and I all competed in the 5km event. Max set off first at 7.30am swimming a super speedy time of 58:52:43 placing 8th (Aus) and dropping a massive 3.20.47. At 9am Renè and I hopped in, battling a very chaotic start full of some very strong competitors. During the race we found each other in the third lap and continued the race in the same pack. Renè was the 11th (Aus) open woman to cross the finish line in a great time of 1:09:06.28. I was the 15th 18-year-old across the line in a time of 1.09.19.76.

Our Busselton trip was full of fast swimming, yummy food, and lots of laughs. All four of us even requalified for next year’s nationals and can’t wait to compete again in 2025!

Stella
B-Grade Club Premierships
On Saturday 10th February, City competed in the annual B-Grade Club Premierships at HBF Stadium. This year, City dressed up as Braveheart for the march past, with our very own Scotsman Andy Donaldson reading the legendary William Wallace script to our fellow athletes. The march past of course not complete without a bagpiper! Unfortunately we were pipped at the post to win the march past with Riverton taking out the top spot.

After the march past, racing was underway and the day moved smoothly fall all events. City competed in almost all the race and finished 7th overall in the points. The club even had a supporters relay filled with parents and committee members! It was amazing to see all our athletes cheering on their fellow teammates and everyone joining in the Braveheart spirit! Congratulations to everyone who raced, we are excited to see what the next year holds.
City Classic Success
On Sunday 4th February, City of Perth were given the opportunity to host the first City Classic meet of the 2024 calendar year. The club members and volunteers had a busy day offering their time to help with marshalling, results running, time keeping, lap counting the 1500's, raffle selling and handing out the City of Perth pins at the medal table.

We would like to extend our thanks to all those who gave up their time to assist the club. These events cannot run without your support by giving up your time to volunteer, we appreciate it.

We would also like to extend our thanks to SwimTek who donated tech suit vouchers to our raffle prizes, and Pietro Gelato and Chaffic who kindly sponsored events on the day!
Rotto Craziness
On Saturday 24th February, the annual Rottnest Channel Swim was scheduled to occur. We had three club members in Max Coten and Rene Watson (soloists) and Tully Grimes-Harrison (duo) who were scheduled to compete. Club alumni Simon Huitenga and Luke Basson were also set to compete in a team of 4.

After precarious weather predictions all week leading up to the day, the race was given the green light at 4:30am and all swimmers were able to start their race. After almost 4 hours of racing, the event was unfortunately abandoned due to an extreme weather warning and all swimmers were told to exit the water.

This was heart breaking for all our athletes, but we admire their determination to start the race and their dedication and commitment to not let this shift their focus for the race next year. Max was actually leading the male solo category and had about 2km left to swim! We are truly sorry to you all, but we stand behind you as you look to compete again in 2025. Onwards and upwards.
City of Perth Achieve Gold
City of Perth Swimming Club has now achieved the BRONZE, SILVER & GOLD level in the Swimming WA Club Excellence Program 2023/2024.
Our club demonstrated excellence in areas such as continuous improvement, effective communication and best practices in governance and safety.
This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our club and its members, coaches and committee.
We now go in the draw to win a brand new equipment cage worth $3000! Go City of Perth!
